Health care inspired by … our community

Healthy residents build stronger communities. In 2019, we connected with community and other business leaders through:

Volunteering

  • 6,000 Blue Cross employees volunteered over 18,000 hours to more than 50 Michigan organizations and community partners, including Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake, Michigan Senior Olympics, Michigan Special Olympics and Easterseals Miracle League of Michigan.

  • Employees donated more than 6,000 boxes of cereal and other breakfast items during a Blue Cross-hosted, statewide summer cereal drive. The donated goods went to eight regional Michigan food pantries to supplement breakfast for children during summer break.

Sponsorships

  • We sponsored 30 community events and activities with employee volunteer opportunities, including the Grand Rapids Turkey Trot. Proceeds benefited the Grand Rapids Public Schools afterschool athletics, giving approximately 6,000 students in grades K – 12 an opportunity to join activities without having to pay to play.

Safer drinking water for Detroit students

We contributed $100,000 to Detroit Public Schools for the installation of new water hydration systems with built-in filter technology. Five hundred systems were installed for the 2019 – 2020 school year to keep drinking water safe from containments and offer students a choice healthier than sugary drinks.
